Starting a gym in India: the business checklist
Before you open: register the business, sort GST if it applies, decide your plans and prices, set up UPI and a way to give invoices, and decide how you'll track members and renewals from day one. Most new gyms lose money not on equipment but on renewals they forgot to chase — set that up first.

Paperwork
- Business registration (proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company)
- GST registration if your turnover crosses the threshold or you choose to register
- Local licences required by your city or state — check with your municipality
- A current account and a UPI ID in the business name
Plans and prices
Keep it simple: monthly, quarterly and yearly, with a clear saving for longer plans, and an optional joining fee. Add one or two PT options.
Payments and invoices
UPI at the desk and online, a proper invoice for every payment, and a clear record of dues for part payments.
Run it from day one
Track every member's plan, payment and visits from the first day. HextaGym's free plan covers your first 50 members — and grows with you.
Frequently asked questions
What's the GST rate for gym services?
5% without input tax credit, from 22 September 2025.
When should I start using gym software?
From your first member. Moving 50 members later is easy; reconstructing 500 members' dues from a register is not.
How should I price my first plans?
Look at gyms nearby, keep three plans, and make longer plans clearly better value.
